If a response cannot be matched to a legal move, the client deliberately substitutes a random one.
For a computer opponent in your own board game, let game code list the allowed moves first. Have a developer ask the AI to choose from that list, then check the answer again before playing it. This chess example keeps the match running with a random allowed move if the answer cannot be used.
